Mission Statement

The Central Ohio Health & Wellness Center, Inc., is a non-profit organization developed and committed to create and ensure competent, ethical, effective, and efficient treatment services in order to promote and preserve the dignity and rights of the individuals we care for.

The Central Ohio Health & Wellness Center, Inc., is a collaboration among professionals and residents who are responding to a long awaited need for the establishment of an organization whose primary purpose is to provide the long awaited specialized mental health services to Central Ohio residents who are both mentally retarded and mentally ill. Finding appropriate treatment services for these individuals unfortunately requires persistence.  Quite often if services are identified they are typically limited due to the lack of the necessary treatment specialization demanded by this population.  The Central Ohio Health & Wellness Center, Inc., will offer a comprehensive array of mental health services to meet the needs of our citizens.  Our comprehensive clinic will strive for a reputation of excellence in an effort improve the quality of life for those with or at risk of mental illness and mental retardation.

The perception of the problem of mental illness in people with mental retardation has affected the delivery of desperately needed services to these individuals across the state of Ohio.  In the past, emotional disturbances and mental retardation were viewed as coexisting and inseparable entities which were untreatable.   Eventually, people realized that mental retardation was not the same as mental illness and two distinct systems evolved.  Sadly, individuals diagnosed with a dual diagnosis were shuffled between the two service systems and in the process were left unserved.  The primary motivation to develop our clinic has been to bridge the gap between the two service systems by utilizing a highly skilled staff who possess the necessary clinical skills, expertise, and experience to accurately diagnose, treat, and manage those individuals who are truly dually diagnosed.  With a population of 11 million and using a percentage of .03 percent (percentage of individuals with MR), then Ohio would have a total number of 330,000 individuals diagnosed with Mental Retardation.  Based on these data the available statistics suggest that there are anywhere between .3 to .4 (percentage of individuals who are also mentally ill), or 99,000 to 132,000 individuals who have both mental illness and mental retardation who presently reside in Ohio.

The Central Ohio Health & Wellness Center, Inc., is organized and  operated  exclusively to provide highly specialized services which include Behavioral Counseling and Therapy, Psychological Testing & Mental Health Assessment, and in the near future  Pharmacological Management. Clinical services will be delivered by skilled  professionals including and not limited to clinical psychologists and psychological assistants, and interns.  Thus, the aim is to bridge the gap between the services lacking for individuals with mental illness but for those individuals also stricken with both mental illness and mental retardation.
